WoW Tip: Easy Money

I’m not a WoW pro by any means. My highest level character is a 43 Prot Pally and my alts are a 40 Fire Mage and 21 Holy Priest. So while I’m not a level 70 with a ton of gold to my name, I have played the game a bit.

The reason I’m writing this guide is that I just hit 40 with my Fire Mage. I was so excited to get my mount. I had saved up 9 gold (I spend as a get, so saving up that much is unheard of for me) and ran off to buy my mount. Then I was hit in the face with the realization that in addition to my 9g, I had to spend ten times that in order to USE the mount I was buying. That sucks!

Luckily my mage had recently taken on mining as a profession. “Mining?” you ask. Yes, Mining. It’s a money making profession. On a good day, a stack of 20 copper (lowest level mined item) sells for around 2g.

Even if you’re not a miner, play the ore game. My experience has shown me that the cost of ore in the Auction House fluctuates a LOT. One day you can buy a stack of 20 copper ore for 50s, the next it costs 2g. So buy as much as you can on a cheap day and sell it on a high day. When buying, people don’t want to wait for a good day. They want their ore now, and they don’t mind paying gold for it.

There’s always that one guy that goes into the AH, sees items selling high and sells his own collection of that item for half the price and makes a killing because people buy his and not the rest. Take advantage of this if you’re selling your own at full price. Buy him out and sell his own copper for full price. It’s cut throat, but it works. Even if you’re not selling, buy him out and do the same.

My mage’s other profession is enchanting. Now THERE’S a money-making profession. You can make a good bit of money enchanting or people, but at a low level your noob enchants aren’t of much use to anyone but noobs who aren’t going to pay much for your services. So stick to disenchanting. Disenchant stuff and sell the D/E items in full stacks. I once made a small fortune in selling d/e items with my Pally.

Anyone playing WoW can find me on the Khadgar server playing as-

Palleaon (40 mage)
Porkins (43 pally)
EwokOverlord (22 priest)

EPISODE V: THE JEREMY STRIKES BACK

With some CSS under my belt, I set out to refine my skill. I did this by once again turning to Andreas Viklund’s template. The reason I did this is that I’m convinced the best way to learn something is to throw yourself into it. Give it your everything and work your ass off until you get it. Even then, keep it up. You never know it all. I thought I knew it all, but then I did a string of psd-to-xhtml conversions for a client last month and ended up teaching myself how to do absolute positioning (which is tremendously helpful, by the way).

Business Card Design

I don’t claim to be a great graphic designer, but I think I’ve finally found something graphics-related that I’m decent at. Business card design. I needed to come up with something for Creo Multimedia, so I sat down and threw this together and printed 100:

EPISODE IV: A NEW CODING LANGUAGE

After learning that tables weren’t cool (I don’t care what you think, kids. Using tables isn’t cool and is as bad as smoking crack in the bathroom stall when no one’s looking), I learned that all the good web designers were using something called CSS. Some habits are harder to kick than others. Putting off learning a coding language is the hardest. Hell, I’m doing it right now. I have a ton of free time now that schools out for summer (!,,! ALICE COOPER !,,!), but am I making any attempt to learn more PHP? NO!

EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE HTML

In 9th grade, I became really interested in making a personal website. I figured I could get away with another site-builder web app from 20megsfree or something. But I soon found that they didn’t give me the level of control I wanted. It seemed to me that the only thing for me to do was to learn HTML. Yes, HTML…that thing I’d been putting off learning for two years. I didn’t want to, but I knew it was time. I had to learn it! So I viewed the source code of several websites I liked and threw together a really crappy website that consisted of nothing but image tags, links, some H tags, and a couple <br>’s. It was really horrible. And I knew it, but I didn’t care.
